Preferred Specimen
Bone marrows not collected at Regions will include direct smears/crush preps, cores in B+ fixative, a clot in B+ fixative, and aspirate collected in Heparin (4-10 mL) and EDTA (4-10 mL). Cultures should be collected in Sodium Heparin for viral culture, and blood culture bottles for aerobic and AFB/Fungal.


Instructions
REGIONS: Call the laboratory at 651-254-9612 to schedule a bone marrow. A hematopathologist will be available to collect M-F with advanced notice.
LAKEVIEW: Call the laboratory at 651-430-4633 to schedule a bone marrow.  A hematopathologist will be available to collect M-F with advanced notice

Should be transported in slide carrier and leak proof containers.

Methodology
Bone Marrow testing methodology will be decided by Hematopathologist in conjunction with ordering physician.

Clinical Significance
The decision to perform a bone marrow is made on a case-by-case basis after evaluation of clinical and laboratory data. General indications of the need for a bone marrow include peripheral blood abnormalities, assessment for infectious and storage diseases, staging for neoplasms, and further
evaluation of abnormal lymphoid infiltrates in other sites.
