Clinical Significance
Antibodies to double-stranded DNA (native DNA, nDNA, dsDNA) are an accepted criterion by the American College of Rheumatology for the diagnosis of idiopathic systemic lupus erytematosus (SLE or LE). dsDNA antibodies are detectable in approximately 85% of patients with untreated SLE, and are rarely detectable in other connective tissue diseases. The levels of dsDNA are known to fluctuate with disease activity in SLE and often increase prior to an increase in inflammation.
