Clinical Significance
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is one of the most common systemic autoimmune diseases characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints and may lead to progressive erosions and cartilage destruction. Antibodies highly specific for RA are described as citrullinated or citrulline peptides. Anti-CCP IgG testing has been found to be better at distinguishing RA than either the perinuclear autoantibody test or the test for Rheumatoid Factor. Not all individuals with RA will have detectable anti-CCP antibodies. The antigen preparation used for this assay is described as CCP2 or second generation. Assays using CCP2 show a sensitivity of approximately 70% and specificity of 96%.
