Clinical Significance
The HAV IgM assay is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of acute or recent infection (usually 6 months or less) with hepatitis A virus, a single-stranded non-enveloped, RNA virus classified as a picornavirus. Transmission is typically by fecal-oral route from contaminated water or food. Hepatitis A IgM antibody is usually detectable at the onset of symptoms and may be detectable for up to 3 – 6 months after the onset of illness. Chronic infection has NOT been reported to occur following infection. Positive (Reactive) results for Hepatitis A IgM are reported to the State Department of Health.
