Clinical Significance
C-reactive protein is an acute-phase reactant that reflects low-grade systemic inflammation. Increases in CRP values are non-specific and should not be interpreted without a complete clinical history. CRP measurements may be performed for early detection of infection in pediatrics and risk assessment of coronary heart disease. The risk of CHD increases with values of CRP that exceed 3 mg/L. The sensitive CRP assay is classified as a cardiac C - reactive protein assay. Cardiac CRP assays are for use as an aid in the identification and stratification of individuals at risk for future cardiovascular disease. When used in conjunction with traditional clinical laboratory evaluation of acute coronary syndromes, they may be useful as an independent marker of prognosis for recurring events in patients with stable coronary or acute coronary syndrome.
