Clinical Significance
Platelets are small round or oval fragments of megakaryocyte cytoplasm. Most platelets circulate for 7-10 days and then are removed by the spleen. Decreased platelet levels are found in certain leukemias, chronic bleeding problems, as a result of chemotherapy, autoimmune disorders, renal disease or splenic sequestration. Increased platelets may be seen in normal individuals who display no medical problems, in myeloproliferative disorders and due to certain drugs.
