Clinical Significance
Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein that acts in the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide. A decreased hemoglobin level is called anemia and may be caused by nutritional deficiency, blood loss, abnormal hemoglobin molecule structure, chemotherapy or kidney disease. Elevated levels of hemoglobin are called polycythemia and may be caused by coronary heart disease, pulmonary fibrosis, too much erythropoietin or polycythemia vera.
