Clinical Significance
BNP is one of three natriuretic peptides. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and BNP originate in the cardiac myocytes. C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) originates in the endothelial cells. These peptides regulate blood pressure, electrolyte balance and fluid volume. Primarily the left ventricle in response to pressure and stretch produces BNP. BNP functions to counteract the vasoconstrictive effects of the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system on increasing blood pressure and retaining salt and water. Because of BNP’s short half-life, approximately 20 minutes, and its rapid clearance from circulation, BNP measurements correlate well with ventricular functional status.

Heart failure or congestive heart failure (CHF), when patients experience a buildup of fluid, is a clinical symptom characterized by shortness of breath, fatigue and peripheral edema caused by the heart’s inability to adequately circulate blood to the body’s essential organs. BNP levels increase with decreasing left ventricular function and increasing clinical severity of heart failure. Therefore BNP can be used for both the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with heart failure.
