Clinical Significance
Lower respiratory cultures aid in the differential diagnosis of bacterial and tuberculous, fungal, and nonbacterial pneumonia. If stains and cultures are negative for pathogens, the physician is alerted to look for other causes of chest disease, eg, tumors, viral diseases.
