Clinical Significance
A fluid hematocrit is used to differentiate between a hemothorax (traumatic injury) and chronic membrane injury. In the case of a hemothorax, the fluid hematocrit and whole blood hematocrit should be similar since the hemothorax is a result of blood pouring in at the site of injury. In chronic membrane disease, the hematocrit will be decreased since the effusion will contain both blood and increased pleural fluid
