Preferred Specimen
0.065 mL Whole Venous or Arterial blood, neonatal heelstick, fresh capillary (fingerstick only). Whole blood in EDTA (lavender-top), Lithium Heparin (light green-top), or Sodium Heparin (dark green-top) all acceptable.

Limitations
Capillary samples should not be used in patients with peripheral perfusion problems, patients with severe DKA, shock, severe dehaydration.


Reference Range
Random Glucose: 70 - 180 mg/dL


Clinical Significance
A waived test intended to quantitatively measure glucose in venous whole blood, in arterial whole blood, neonatal heelstick, or fresh capillary whole blood samples drawn from fingertips as an aid in monitoring the effectiveness of glucose control at the Point of Care
