  • NP(nasopharyngeal) swab collected in Universal Transport Media (UTM)
  • NP wash.


Other Acceptable Specimens
NP swab collected in M4 media, or NP culturette
swab is acceptable but not preferred.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Rigid shaft culturette swab because it is not able to enter the nasopharynx.

Low levels of virus shedding may yield a false negative result; therefore it does not rule out the possibility of RSV.

Clinical Significance
This qualitative test is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in neonatal and pediatric patients under the age of 20.
