Limitations
The American Gastroenterological Association Institute does not routinely recommend the measurement of serum IgA in the setting of suspected Celiac disease. We are able to reliably identify through the tTGA assay samples that may contain very low levels of IgA. Samples that indicate the possibility of a low IgA level will be reflexed to a quantitative serum IgA to measure and confirm the actual serum IgA. If the serum IgA is decreased, it is recommended that a tTG IgG be used in place of the tTG IgA assay. Those that are not flagged are unlikely to have selective IgA deficiency.

Reference Range
Negative: <7 EliA U/ml
Equivocal: 7 – 10 EliA U/ml
Positive: >10 EliA U/ml

Clinical Significance
Patients with celiac disease display a hypersensitivity to gluten (wheat) which leads to chronic inflammation and damage of the small intestinal mucosa. Tissue Transglutaminase has been identified as the major autoantigen in celiac disease.
