Limitations
The use of this assay to monitor or diagnose patients has not been approved for this specimen type by the FDA or manufacturer of this assay. LD4 and LD5 isoenzymes are labile at refrigerator and freezer temperatures.

Reference Range
No reference range established

Clinical Significance
Pleural fluid/serum LD ratios: A ratio of greater than 0.6 indicates an exudate, a ratio less than 0.6 indicates a transudate. A pleural fluid LD more than two-thirds the normal upper limit for serum is indicative of an exudate. Any effusion with a high cell count or cell debris will have a high LD ratio.
