Limitations
This assay detects the total Lyme antibody (both IgG and IgM) however the test cannot distinguish between them.
This Lyme test is used as a screening test and should be confirmed by Western Blot testing since other spirochetal diseases (ie, syphilis), mononucleosis, occasionally SLE (systemic lupus
erythematosus) and other mixed connective tissue diseases may give false-positive results.
Equivocal and Positive Lyme specimens are sent to Quest Diagnostics for confirmation by Western Blot testing. Turn around time is generally 3 – 4 working days.

Clinical Significance
Lyme disease is an infectious vector-borne disease caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, and is transmitted through the bite of one of several Ixodes species of Ticks. In the northeastern and Midwestern United States, the organism is most often transmitted through the bite of the deer tick Ixodes dammini. The vector on the US West Coast is Ixodes pacificus, and in Europe the implicated vector is Ixodes ricinus. The disease is most often contracted in the summer months. The assay used at Central Laboratory will detect Lyme disease spread by any of the Ixodes species. Other spirochetal diseases (ie, syphilis), mononucleosis, occasionally SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus) and other mixed connective tissue diseases may give false-positive results.
