Test Code

CPT Codes

Preferred Specimen
3 mL synovial fluid collected in a  red-top tube (no gel) or EDTA (lavender-top) tube or sodium heparin (green-top) tube

Minimum Volume
1 mL

Fluid is collected in sterile vacuum bottle or other collection container and then aliquoted as needed into lavender-top (EDTA), green-top (Heparin), or red-top (unpreserved) tube.

For Crystal Analysis of Body Fluids other than Synovial Fluid, use Test Code 725, Crystal Analysis.

Since Synovial fluid specimens are more difficult to obtain and are frequently "one time only" samples, the criteria for an acceptable sample should not be as ridgid as those for peripheral blood. Samples with small clots should not be rejectecd, but the presence of clot should be noted.
