The recommended laboratory method for diagnosis Listeria infection of the central nervous system is CSF culture. The intended use of this complement fixation assay for Listeria antibodies is to document infection when culture is not performed, or when antibiotic treatment precludes obtaining an accurate culture result. Diagnosis of infections of the central nervous system can be accomplished by demonstrating the presence of intrathecally-produced specific antibody. Interpretation of results may be complicated by low antibody levels found in CSF, passive transfer of antibody from blood, and contamination via bloody taps.

Clinical Significance
A positive result suggests central nervous system infection.
However, results should be interpreted with caution.
