CPT Codes

If the results of HIV-1 RNA, Quantitative, Real-Time PCR are greater than 500 copies/mL, then PhenoSense GT®, performed at Monogram Biosciences, will be added at an additional charge (CPT code(s): 87901, 87903, 87904 (x8)).

Preferred Specimen
Minimum: 3 mL plasma collected in (x2) EDTA (lavender-top) tubes

Other Acceptable Specimens
Plasma in (x2) potassium EDTA (white-top) PPT tubes

Clinical Significance
Measurement of HIV-1 plasma levels (viral load) provides a direct assessment of viremia and should be used in conjunction with CD4+ T-cell counts. HIV-1 RNA quantitation is useful in patients to assess prognosis, monitor progression of HIV-1 infection, determine when to initiate therapy, and monitor the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy.
