Clinical Significance
JC polyoma virus (JCV) is the cause of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a demyelinating neurologic disease of immunocompromised patients and patients on certain medications. This test detects and quantifies JCV in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Detection of the virus in CSF may indicate infection. This is a quantitative molecular test with a linear range of 50-10,000,000 IU/mL.
