Clinical Significance
Acetaldehyde is commonly used in the manufacturing of paraldehyde, butanol, perfumes, aniline dyes, plastics, and synthetic rubber. It is also used in the process of silvering mirrors. Symptoms of overexposure can resemble alcoholism. Other symptoms include erythema, skin burns, dermatitis, lacrimation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Acetaldehyde is an unstable compound postcollection. It will both form and degrade under certain conditions. Although extreme precautions have been demonstrated to maintain the integrity of Acetaldehyde, the results will be affected under typical collection and laboratory procedures.
