Preferred Specimen
1. Gently message subareolar area and mipple with thumb and forefinger until a small drop of fluid appears on apex of nipple.
2. Place labeled glass microscopic slide on fluid drop.
3. Fix smear at once by immersing slide in 95% ethanol or 80% isopropanol. If spray fixative is used, spray smear from a distance of >= 1 foot.
4. Seal container tightly. Attach a numbered red label to specimen container and forward to the laboratory immediately
5. Complete a "Cytology Requisition Form" and forward with specimen.
