Preferred Specimen
Specimen should be collected by the physcian/provider using the following:
1. Using the ThinPrep collection device, insert central bristles of broom/brush into endocervical canal deep enough to allow shorter bristles to fully contact the ectocervix. Push gently and rotate broom in a clockwise direction 5 times.
2. Rinse broom/brush into ThinPrep PreservCyt Solution vial by pushing broom into bottom of vial 10 times, forcing bristles apart. Finally, swirl broom vigorously to further release material.
3. Discard sampling device. Tighten cap of vial securely.
4. Record patient's name and date of birth on vial.
5. Submit a completed physcian's order along with pap smear collection form. Alternatively, a manual Gynecologic Cytology requisition with collection information can be used.
6. Place vial into a biohazard transport bag along with the associated paperwork and forward to the Lab.
Note:
1. No intravaginal therapy or douches 2 to 3 days prior to specimen collection.
2. Recommend use of an unlubricated speculum
