Preferred Specimen
1. Have patient rinse mouth with water prior to obtaining specimen.
2, Expectorate early-morning "deep cough" (not saliva) sputum into a labeled 4-1/2 oz. screw-capped, sterile container. Note: Cough induction by inhalation of a saline aerosol may be used if required.
3. Seal container tightly. Attach numbered red label to specimen container and forward to laboratory immediately .
4. If there is a delay in transport, refrigerate specimen at 4oC and send specimen refrigerated. Notes: If material is suitable, a cell block will be made and microscopic sections prepared. 6. Complete a "Cytology Requisition Form" and forward with specimen. Special procedures to identify organisms (eg, fungi, pneumocystis) or certain substances (eg, hemosiderin) should be noted on request form.
