Preferred Specimen
1. Spinal fluid specimen should be collected by a physician and submitted in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Seal container tightly. Attach numbered red label to specimen container and forward to laboratory immediately .
3. If there is a delay in transport, refrigerate specimen at 4oC and send specimen refrigerated. Notes: If material is suitable, a cell block will be made and microscopic sections prepared.
4. If other tests are to be performed, devide it into separate specimens, 1 for each requisition is recommended.
5. Complete a "Cytology Requisition Form" and forward with specimen. Special procedures to identify organisms (eg, fungi, pneumocystis) or certain substances (eg, hemosiderin) should be noted on request form.
