Instructions
"Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Nasal Washing
1. Instill up to 1 mL of sterile saline into patient's nare, introduce a soft rubber squeeze bulb into back of nostril, and slowly suction, withdrawing bulb after suction is applied. Perform wash on 1 or both nostrils.
2. Submit 0.5 mL of nasal wash in a BD Vacutainer with no additive tube.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Specimen is viable at ambient temperature 4 hours and at refrigerated temperature for 24 hours.
2. Specimen should be collected during acute phase of illness when greatest amount of viral shedding occurs.
3. Excessively mucoid specimens may interfere with test performance.
4. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
Nasopharyngeal Swab
1. Using a sterile, foam-tipped swab obtain specimen from nasopharynx by gently inserting swab beneath inferior turbinate of either nare until it reaches posterior nasopharyngeal wall.
2. Gently rotate swab and rub against mucosal surface.
3. Remove swab from nose and insert, tip down, into swab packaging.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Specimen must arrive in Microbiology within 1 hour of collection.
2. Specimen source is required on request form for processing."
