Instructions
"Nasopharyngeal swab
1. Obtain the Universal Transport media/nasopharyngeal swab collection device from Microbiology.
1. Using the sterile nasopharyngeal swab, obtain specimen from nasopharynx by gently inserting swab beneath inferior turbinate of either nare until it reaches posterior nasopharyngeal wall.
2. Gently rotate swab and rub against mucosal surface.
3. Remove swab from nose and insert, tip down, into the tube of universal transport media.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Specimen must arrive in Microbiology within 1 hour of collection.
2. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
