Instructions
"Material collected by methods normally used for culture may also be submitted for Gram stain, in which case laboratory technologists will prepare smears. However, if you are going to submit a prepared Gram stain instead of actual specimen, follow instructions below:
1. Using a pencil, label frosted ends of 2 glass microscopic slides with patient's name and hospital number.
2. With a single maneuver, spread material to be examined thinly over an area no larger than 1 sq. cm. Do not use a circular or back and forth motion to apply specimen to slide.
3. If possible, submit 2 slides prepared in same manner.
4. Allow slides to air dry.
5. Place slides in an envelope or slide mailer, label properly, and seal it before delivery to laboratory.
