Order this test when submitting an actual catheter tip. If submitting a swab sample of the catheter site area, order "AERNS".

A positive bacteria result, depending on the organism isolated, may reflex additional identification and/or susceptibility charges

Instructions
Submit only 1 of the following specimens: Acceptable Specimens: Long-term percutaneous long catheters (Broviac , Hickman , Raaf, Groshong , Quinton) Long-term subcutaneous ports (Infusaport, Port-a-Cath , Medi-port) Short-term percutaneous long catheters (Swan-Ganz , Intra-cath, Cordis , Multilumen, Udall) Short catheters (peripheral, steel needles, umbilical, arterial) Unacceptable Specimen: Urinary catheters 1. To prevent contamination by skin microorganisms and antibiotic ointment, clean skin insertion site with a ChloraPrep One-Step Frepp Applicator (2% chlorhexidine gluconate/70% isopropyl alcohol) or an iodophor and alcohol prior to removal of cannula. 2. Remove cannula in an aseptic manner once alcohol has dried. If purulence of catheter exit site is evident, send pus for culture and Gram stain. Long Catheters Two portions of these catheters should be sent for culture: distal intravascular tip and proximal transcutaneous segment. Each segment should be approximately 2 cm to 3 cm long. Send in separate containers. Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing. Short Catheters The cannula is cultured in its entirety following removal of hub. To remove hub, use sterile scissors, or snap off steel needles with a sterile hemostat. Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
