Anaerobic Nonsurg Culture/AER/GS
MessageIf more than 4 organisms are recovered from a single specimen taken from 1 site, including aerobes, then only Gram stain reaction and morphology of each organism will be reported, unless attending physician specifically requests laboratory to identify them. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing on anaerobes requires a specific order.

Instructions
Unacceptable Specimens:
Throat, nasopharyngeal, and gingival swabs; sputum and tracheal aspirates; gastrointestinal contents (feces, gastric, and small bowel), rectal swabs, external fistula swabs, and colostomy stoma swabs; vaginal or cervical swabs; voided urine; and superficial wound swabs.
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Sterile Aspiration
1. Decontaminate collection site with 70% alcohol. 2. Inject a small amount of sterile saline, if required, to reduce consistency enough to aspirate. 3. Puncture skin with needle, and aspirate material from lesion. 4. Remove needle from syringe, seal syringe containing aspirate, and deliver to laboratory immediately. Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
Swab
1. Decontaminate collection site with 70% alcohol. 2. Use a BBL CultureSwab to obtain specimen from deep in lesion. (Dry swab is not acceptable.) 3. Transport swab promptly to laboratory. Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
Tissue
1. Aseptically collect 0.5 g of tissue from a decontaminated surface and place in a screw-capped, sterile container. 2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
