Message
If more than 4 organisms are recovered from a single specimen taken from 1 site, then only Gram stain reaction and morphology of each organism will be reported, unless attending physician specifically requests laboratory to identify them.

A positive bacteria result, depending on the organism isolated, may reflex additional identification and/or susceptibility charges

Instructions
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Sterile Aspiration 1. Decontaminate collection site with 70% alcohol. 2. Inject a small amount of sterile saline, if required, to reduce consistency enough to aspirate. 3. Puncture skin with needle, and aspirate material from lesion. 4. Remove needle from syringe, seal syringe containing aspirate, and deliver to laboratory immediately. Note: 1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing. 2. One specimen/24 hour period/site.

Swab 1. Decontaminate collection site with 70% alcohol. 2. Use a BBL CultureSwab Plus to obtain specimen from deep in lesion (Dry swab is not acceptable.) 3. Forward promptly to laboratory. Note: 1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing. 2. One specimen/24 hour period/site.

Tissue 1. Aseptically collect 0.5 g of tissue from a decontaminated surface and place in a screw- capped, sterile container. 2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Note: 1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing. 2. One specimen/24 hour period/site.
