Message
The organism is usually isolated from the male urethra and female uterine cervix and less commonly from the rectum, throat, amniotic fluid, blood, synovial fluid, eye, fallopian tube, Bartholin's gland, and prostate.

Instructions
" Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Fluid (Joint, Pericardial, Pleural, or Spinal)
1. Collect 2 mL of fluid into a sterile screw-capped container.
2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
2. One specimen/24 hour period.

Swab
Specimen must arrive within 6 hours of collection.

Cervical or Vaginal (Females)
1. Collect specimen using a BBL CultureSwab Plus.
2. Inoculate Thayer-Martin medium directly, if possible.
3. Forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Do not refrigerate.
Note: 1. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
2. One specimen/24 hour period.

Urethra (Males)
1. Collect specimen using a calcium alginate swab (Calgiswab).
2. Inoculate Thayer-Martin medium directly, if possible.
3. Forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Do not refrigerate.

2. One specimen/24 hour period."
