Clinical Significance
Methanol can be consumed intentionally or accidentally. It is an ingredient in antifreeze, cleaning fluids and is used as a solvent. The CNS effects of methanol are less than ethanol. However, this substance is far more toxic since ingestion can lead to acidosis and optic neuropathy which can result in blindness or death. Methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde.
