VENOUS BLOOD GAS (VBG) CO-OXIMETRY

This sample must be collected at sent DIRECTLY ( (NOT via pneumatic tube) and IMMEDIATELY to the Blood Gas Laboratory located on the 5th floor Ruby Hospital.
For Fairmont, please deliver the specimen directly to the FMT Medical Center Laboratory.

Preferred Specimen
Outpatient Phlebotomy Instructions
Supplies:
• Pro-vent Arterial Blood Gas samplying kit with dry lithium
• Butterfly setup
• Venipuncture supplies
Process:
1. Attach Pro-vent to the butterfly
2. Push plunger to expel air
3. Fill with blood to the 1.5-2.0 line
4. Attach cap with filter and push blood our the filter (this keeps the sample anaerobic)
5. Roll and mix sample
6. Label with the EPIC printed label (Phlebotomist uses the order released by patient access)
7. Put sample ON ICE
8. Before patient leaves, document if they are breathing room air or oxygen (document how much oxygen)
9. Deliver sample to 5th floor respiratory ABG lab IMMEDIATELY (DO NOT send via pneumatic tube)
