Cryoglobulin (% Cryocrit), Serum
Test CodeCRYOQ
Alias/See Also
LAB713
CPT Codes

82595

Preferred Specimen
Patient Preparation: Overnight fasting is required.
Specimen Type: Serum Red
Collection Container/Type: Red top
Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial
Specimen Volume: 6 mL
Collection Instructions:
- Allow serum sample to clot for one (1) hour in a 37° C water bath, oven, incubator, or heat block.
- After clotting, centrifuge the specimen for 10 minutes at 1600 RCF(G) utilizing one of the 3 options below:
- In a "warm" centrifuge at 37° C.
- In a bench-top centrifuge placed in a "warm room" at 37° C.
- At room temperature, in a bench-top centrifuge prewarmed by running it for 10 minutes at 1600 RCF(G).
- After centrifuging, decant serum into a screw-cap vial and transport at room temperature.
Additional Information:
- If the sample is NOT kept at 37° C during all processing steps, the cryoprecipitate if present can precipitate out of solution and be lost in the clot or during the centrifugation process and result in a false negative result.
- DO NOT REFRIGERATE OR FREEZE.
- No tests can be added or poured off this tube; cryocrit and cryoglobulin evaluation only.
Minimum Volume
3 mL
Instructions
Allow blood to clot for one (1) hour in a 37° C water bath, incubator, heat block or heel warmer. After clotting, centrifuge the specimen as quickly as possible. It is not necessary to use a warm centrifuge but do not use a refrigerated one. Decant all of the serum into one transport vial (do not aliquot any of the cryoglobulin serum into any other tube). Transport at room temperature preferred.
Note: If the sample is not kept at 37° C during clotting, the cryoglobulin, if present, can precipitate during centrifugation and be lost in the clot resulting in a false negative result.
Note: If the sample is not kept at 37° C during clotting, the cryoglobulin, if present, can precipitate during centrifugation and be lost in the clot resulting in a false negative result.

Clinical Significance
The cryocrit is primarily intended for following a patient with previously defined and quantitated cryoglobulins. The cryocrit may consist of cryoglobulins, fibrins or mixtures of cryoglobulins and fibrins. If not previously characterized, consider ordering Cryoglobulin Screen with Reflex to Cryoglobulin Profile, Serum.
