A negative result does not exclude infection with S. pneumoniae. S. pneumoniae vaccine may cause false positive results in urine in the 48 hours following vaccination.

Reference Range
Negative for S. pneumoniae Antigen

Clinical Significance
A positive test suggests that the patient has pneumococcal pneumonia. A negative test is a presumptive negative for pneumococcal pneumonia, suggesting no current or recent pneumococcal infection. Infection due to S. pneumoniae cannot be ruled out since the antigen present in the specimen may be below the detection limit of the test.
