Test Code
LEGAG

Alias/See Also
Epic: LAB886

Preferred Specimen

Specimen Type: Urine
Collection Container: Sterile container
Specimen Volume: 1.0 mL

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL

Instructions
Collect random urine into a sterile container.

Specimen Stability

Room temperature: 24 hours
Refrigerated: 14 days
Frozen: Unacceptable

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Rejection will occur for the following reasons: improperly labeled specimen, insufficient volume, specimen not submitted in appropriate transport container, Room temperature urine that arrives >24 hours after collection, Leaking or broken containers.

Methodology
Immunochromatographic assay for the qualitative detection of Legionella pneumophila Serogroup 1 Antigen

Setup Schedule

Daily

Report Available

1-2 days

Limitations

This test only detects L. pneumophila serogroup 1 Antigen. It will not detect infections caused by other L. pneumophila serogroups or other Legionella species. A negative antigen result does not exclude infection with L. pneumophila Serogroup 1. A positive test result can occur due to current or past infection and therefore is not definitive for infection without other supporting evidence.

Reference Range
Negative for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen

Clinical Significance
A positive test result is a presumed positive for L. pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen in urine, suggesting current or past infection. A Negative result is presumptive negative for L. pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen in urine, suggesting no recent or current infection. Infection due to Legionella cannot be ruled out since other serogroups and species may cause disease, antigen may not be present in the urine in early infection, and the level of antigen present in the urine may be below the detection limit of the test.
