Instructions

Collect a random urine specimen. Maintain sterility.
Specimen must arrive within 60 minutes of collection
If longer than 60 minutes before analysis, store at 2°-8°C.

Clinical Significance

The measurement of specific gravity gives an indication of the total solute concentration. The inability to concentrate or dilute urine is an indication of renal disease or hormonal deficiency. In serous fluids, the specific gravity helps to differentiate between exudates and transudates.
