Instructions
Newborns MUST BE A MINIMUM OF 12 HOURS OLD at the time of collection. Newborns whose specimens were collected PRIOR to 12 hours of age MUST have second specimen submitted. For newborns requiring RBC trasfusion, collect the specimen prior to the transfusion even if the newborn is under 12 hours of age, however, a second specimen must be collected between 24 hours after the last transfusion and six days of age. FOR HEELSTICKS, CALL LAB FOR LINE DRAWS, CARD MUST BE READY WHEN DRAWN SATURATE DESIGNATED CIRCLES ON NBS FORM, BEING SURE BLOOD COMPLETELY FILLS FRONT AND BACK OF CIRCLES (PKU IS PART OF THE NEWBORN SCREEN)
