Instructions
Brushing smears from Pulmonary, GI, or other smear sources:
-Quickly make smear & immediately insert in 95% ETOH container provided by Cytology Lab.
-Request AFB and/or GMS stains if desired. GMS stains fungus (PCP, Candida, Aspergillus, etc.)
Brush tips:
-Cut off tip, insert in tube containing saline.
-Samples can be shared with Microbiology
Bronchial washings or BALs:
-Submit fresh (unfixed) so sample can be shared wtih Microbiology.
-Request AFB and/or GMS stains if desired.
CSF:
-Submit fresh (unfixed) sample for sharing with other departments as neccessary.
Body Fluids (pleural, ascitic, pericardial):
-Submit fresh (unfixed) sample
Abscess, peri-implant, breast, pelvic washings, other miscellaneous fluids:
-Submit fresh (unfixed)
Urinary tract:
-Submit fresh (unfixed) sample for sharing with other departments as necessary.
Submit source information with the specimen.

Unfixed fluid: must be submitted refrigerated within 24 hours.

Clinical Significance
This test is used for all non-gynecologic sources EXCEPT specimens obtained by fine needle aspiration. For fine needle aspirate (FNA) specimens, refer to Fine Needle Aspiration (LAB534)
