Light green top tube (lithium heparin plasma)


Minimum Volume
Whole blood: 600 uL (one full light-green-top microtainer or two full red-top microtainers).

Serum/plasma: 300 uL.


Other Acceptable Specimens
Gold top (serum separator tube) or Red Top


Instructions
Included in Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) and Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP).
LAB: Serum and plasma: Separate specimen within 2 days of collection.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: up to 4 days.
Refrigerated: 1 week.
Frozen: 6 months.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Grossly Hemolyzed, contaminated, not enough volume

Limitations
Specimens contaminated with cationic surfactants show a positive interference (e.g.,
addition of 10 mg/L benzalkonium chloride resulted in an increase in sodium
concentration of approximately 20 mmol/L).
(b) Note: Heparinized catheters may contain benzalkonium chloride. Specimens drawn
through these catheters should not be used.


Reference Range
Plasma: 135 - 145 mmol/l.
