Preferred Specimen
Light green top tube (lithium heparin plasma)


Minimum Volume
Whole blood: 600 uL (one full light-green-top microtainer or two full red-top microtainers).

Serum/plasma: 300 uL.


Other Acceptable Specimens
Gold top (serum separator tube) or Red Top


Instructions
The patient should avoid any exercise of the arm or hand during collection because opening and closing the fist increases potassium concentration by 10% to 20% Included in Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) and Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP). LAB: No hemolysis. Serum and plasma: Hemolyzed specimens should not be used. Separate specimen within 2 hours of collection.

Frozen: 1 year.
