Instructions
Most cultures have Gram stains included in the order indicated by “Smear” in the test name. An example is “Culture, Wound, Smear, Aerobic.”
Gram stains are routinely done on most specimens submitted for routine culture except Blood, Nose, Stool, Throat and Urine cultures.
STAT gram stains will be read at HHI.
Routine gram stains will be read at HHNB.


Transport Container
Sterile screw top container or swab in Liquid Amies medium (E Swab)

ESwab for Cultures (Storeroom Item#2653)

Sterile Specimen Container (Storeroom Item# 001691)


Transport Temperature
Submit within 2 hours at room temperature
Submit within 4 hours if refrigerated
1 day for dried smear
