Preferred Specimen
Fresh diarrheic (watery, loose or unformed) stool specimen in clean dry container.
Minimum Volume
5 ml
Instructions
If the Clostridium difficile PCR assay is negative, no further testing will be performed.
If the Clostridium difficile PCR assay is positive, Toxin testing is reflexed.
If the Clostridium difficile PCR assay is positive, Toxin testing is reflexed.
Transport Temperature
Deliver specimen to Lab within 4 hours at room temperature or within 24 hours refrigerated.
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
- Formed stools
- Frozen stools
- Colon wash or fecal specimens in Cary-Blair or C/S transport media
- Patients under 2 years of age
- Patients with previous negative within 7 days
- Patients with previous positive within 3 months

Limitations
