Para thyroid Hormone
Preferred Specimen
EDTA plasma (Lavender Top)
Minimum Volume
Whole blood: 3 mL
Plasma: 1.5 mL
Plasma: 1.5 mL
Instructions
Testing is scheduled in advance, O.R. responsible for notifying lab at least 24 hours before surgery and providing phone extension for notification of results.
The collection tube label, in addition to the standard patient information, should include the date and time of draw, employee # and draw interval (i.e. Baseline, 30 min, 60 min, etc.)
Due to the time critical nature of intraoperative testing each campus location has a designated PTH-Intraoperative workflow.
Please order PTH Intraoperative Baseline [LAB5210595] first, then PTH intraoperative [LAB5210934]. Refer to SOP.
Lab will place STAT PTH Intraoperative orders upon receipt of specimen and call results to phone extension provided.

Specimen Stability
Plasma samples are stable at room temperature for ≤8 hours and may be stored for up to 2 days at 2–8 °C (36–46 °F)
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Specimens not reccommended:
Turbid specimens. Turbidity in specimens may affect results.
Hemolyzed specimens.

Hemolyzed specimens.
Methodology
Hoag Irvine: Chemiluminescence
Hoag Newport: Electrochemiluminescence
Report Available
To be performed as soon as possible.
Limitations
Intact PTH is labile and susceptible to fragmentation. Correct handling of patient samples is necessary to ensure that the PTH molecule remains intact. The degree of fragmentation will depend on both time and temperature of storage. Test results from the same assay should be used when monitoring patients, and results should not be used interchangeably between assays.
Reference Range
Hoag Irvine: 8-75 pg/mL
Hoag Newport:15-65 pg/mL
Hoag Newport:15-65 pg/mL
Performing Laboratory
HHI and HHN Laboratory
