URINALYSIS WITH MICROSCOPIC IF INDICATED

Message
Urinalysis

Test Code
LAB347

Alias/See Also
Urinalysis reflex Microscopic

Includes
Urine Chemistry Strips: Color, Appearance, Specific Gravity, pH, Protein, Blood, Glucose, Ketone, Bilirubin, Nitrite, Leukocyte Esterase, Urobilinogen

Microscopic Findings to Include if present: RBC,WBC, BACT, Epithelial, Mucous, Casts, and Crystals

Preferred Specimen
Random clean catch urine, label properly and send to Lab within one hour for optimal chemical and cellular analysis.

Minimum Volume
4mL

Instructions
Laboratory will include microscopic analysis if indicated.

Specimen Stability
Non-preservative specimen: 2 hours at room temperature
Non-preservative specimen: 4 hours if refrigerated 2 - 8°C. Refrigerated urine should be brought to room temperature prior to analysis.
Preserved specimen [BD transport containers - yellow and red top tubes]: 12 hours (Room Temp or Refrigerated)

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Samples with apparent contamination of stool or other artifacts. Do not add disinfectant or detergent.
Samples with total volume of <2.0 mL (exception neonatal samples or Foley catheter)
Samples outside of stability
Mislabeled samples

Methodology
Automated urine chemistry system performing measurements of urine physical and chemical constituents utilizing test strips read by reflectance spectroscopy and specific gravity using the Refractive Index. Turbidity is determined using transmitted and scattered light. Twenty-three colors are analyzed simultaneously using reflectance values at specific wavelengths. An additional correction pad is included to compensate for the natural color of urine and its effect on the color reactions of the pads.

Setup Schedule
Same day. Available STAT.

Limitations
Hematuria (bloody specimen) contaminates the S.G. cell, consequently producing incorrect analysis results. The actual color of the macroscopic hematuria (~10,000 RBCs/µL) may not correspond with the result determined by the instrument. Measurement of dense turbid urine may produce incorrect S.G.

Drugs that cause urine coloration can cause interference with some of the chemistries including Bilirubin and Urobilinogen.

Reference Range
Specific Gravity: 1.005 - 1.030 pH: 5.0 -8.0 Negative: Protein, Glucose, Bilirubin, Ketone, Blood, Nitrite, Leukocyte Esterase; Urobilinogen: <2.0 mg/dl

Clinical Significance
Urinalysis provides important information regarding the status of a patient's health. Urinalysis tests results are used to:
Aid in the diagnosis of disease.
Screen for asymptomatic, congenital, or hereditary disease.
Monitor progress of disease.
Monitor effectiveness or complications of therapy.

Performing Laboratory
HHN / HHI Lab
