Limitations
Low levels (<35 mg/dL) of Bence Jones or light chain proteins may not be detected. Elevated levels of Bence Jones or
light chain proteins may predict approximately 40% lower concentrations than pyrogallol red or turbidimetric methods.
Refer to the Recovery table.
• Very dilute urine samples (specific gravity ≤1.010) may yield artificially high 24-hour protein concentrations in large
volume (>2500 mL) samples.
• Very concentrated (specific gravity ≥1.025) urine samples may yield artificially low 24-hour protein concentrations in
large volume (>2500 mL) samples.
• Certain drugs and clinical conditions are known to alter urine protein concentration in vivo. For additional information,
refer to one of the published summaries.
