Preferred Specimen
Light green top tube (lithium heparin plasma)


Minimum Volume
Whole blood: 600 uL (one full light-green-top microtainer or two full red-top microtainers).

Serum/plasma: 300 uL plasma.


Other Acceptable Specimens
Gold top or Red top acceptable


Instructions
PATIENT PREPARATION: 14-hour fasting sample preferred.
Do not use collection tubes with glycerol
-lubricated stoppers

LAB: Dilute grossly lipemic specimens. Separate specimen within 4 hours of collection.


Specimen Stability
Ambient: up to 3 days.
Refrigerated: up to 7 days.
Frozen: 6 months.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Limitations
Grossly lipemic samples show a slower rate of color development than do clear serums, which results in a
negative bias.


Reference Range
10 - 149 mg/dL
Normal triglycerides: <150 mg/dL Borderline high: 150 to 199 mg/dL
High: 200 to 499 mg/dL
Very high: >500 mg/dL
