Preferred Specimen
Arterial or venous blood line.

Minimum Volume
3.0 mL

Other Acceptable Specimens
Thoroughly flushed in-dwelling catheters

None. Test within 2 minutes.

Report Available
Results from Point of Care testing are interfaced to the EMR.

Limitations
Please refer to procedure "Point of Care Hepcon Hemostasis Management System (HMS)" Section 8.

Heparin Assay (HPT): If all four channels clot before 30 seconds, the blood sample may be activated, and channel clotting time resolution may not be great enough to give a reliable answer. Run times greater than 249 seconds may indicate the heparin level of the blood was higher than the range of the cartridge, the expiration date has been exceeded, or the cartridge was improperly handled or stored.

High-range Activated Clotting Time (HR-ACT): When on cardiopulmonary bypass, several factors can influence the performance of the HR-ACT.

Heparin Dose Response (HDR): Individual responses to heparin vary considerably.

Reference Range
Baseline ACT:111 - 147 seconds
Heparinized ACT: > 480 seconds
HDR: Patient specific
Post Protamine HPT: 0.0 mg/Kg
Post Protamine ACT: back to baseline
