Clinical Significance
Protein electrophoresis evaluates the major protein fractions found in urine. Normally, only small amounts of albumin are seen. Urinary protein electrophoresis is useful in classifying the type of renal damage, if present. Immunofixation is useful in characterizing M-components observed in the protein electrophoresis and in identifying light-chain disease.
