Throat/Nasopharnyx Culture
MessageBecause the agents of disease have specific culture and detection requirements, a routine culture is rarely indicated. In most cases, providers should request the appropriate test to identify specific pathogens, such as BORDETELLA PERTUSSIS CULTURE, THROAT STREP A CULTURE, etc.

Instructions
NASOPHARYNX
1. Gently insert a mini tip swab into the posterior nasopharynx via the nose.
2. Rotate the swab slowly for 3-5 seconds to absorb secretions.
3. Remove the swab and place in transport media.
THROAT
1. Depress tongue with depressor.
2. Sample posterior tonsils and inflamed areas with a sterile swab. White patches in the tonsillar area are especially productive for streptococcal isolation.
3. Return swab to container.
4. Label container noting source of throat.
